Following the movie, we will have a Pinewood Derby track set up under the Colonial Theatre marquee. Kids (and dads too) will be able to race some cars and talk with local Cub Scout Pack leaders and parents about how to get involved in Cub Scouts, which is one of the premier family programs for 1st-5th grade boys that teaches character, citizenship and physical fitness through fun, family activities…like the Pinewood Derby!

Also…please feel free to stop by the “Down and Derby” Cub Scout First Friday display the day before, on Friday, August 6th on Bridge Street. The Cub Scouts will be directly in front of the Colonial Theatre with games, prizes and a Pinewood Derby track and cars. Come race some cars with the Cub Scouts and join the fun! Down and Derby is a fun, family comedy about a children’s Pinewood Derby race that turns a group of dads into an awkward bunch of competitors. This comedy pokes fun at the desperate behavior of parents who compete with one another through their children, a social dynamic seen in everyday activities ranging from little league to beauty pageants. Hilarity builds as the dads teeter on the edge of insanity and resort to cover-ups and sabotage in an effort to win the race, while their kids plot revenge on their dads and plan to never be underestimated again. In the end, the farce reaches comical and outrageous levels with a surprise twist! Starring German (Ally McBeal), Lauren Holly (Dumb & Dumber) and Pat Morita (The Karate Kid).

How to win using unorthodox methods, but stay within the rules? I propose a Pinewood Derby car might be built in the form of a very tall tower with a pyramidal base. Three wheels are at the base with the fourth at the tower tip. This car towers over its competitors. After rolling down the initial slope, it topples forwards onto the track but continues to roll. The three wheels minimize initial friction down the track (as compared to four) and the fall forwards puts the nose ahead of competitors and so across the finish line first.

Outrage and much consulting of rules ensues. Ultimately Bung Jr is crowned Pope of Pinewood – the second step towards World Domination!

Trophies will be awarded for 1st-3rd place in each Division.
The Pure Stock, Limited, Stock and Modified Division will be divided in adult/youth (14 & under). Pro-Stock, Pro-Modified, Extreme Pro-Modified, Hot Rod 66 and Mills Craft will not be divided into youth/adult.

This will be a PWDRacing Sanctioned Event for the purpose of rules/divisions ONLY !! No points/records will be awarded.

Cars will/must be inspected prior to being raced. All decisions by the tech-in/inspection team are final !! Cars can/will be re-assigned to a different division if they are found not to qualify for the division they are being entered.

He was planning on taking home a few awards once the night was through, and his Big Brother, Zack Bearden, was there to see the car in action.

Nash had been working on his derby car in a meticulous fashion. He spent several hours tinkering and painting his car before the race. At the end of several races, Nash realized that the car was nowhere near as fast as it appeared.

Before the derby car, Bearden and Nash used their time together to work on several other projects.

“He likes crafty stuff,” said Bearden. “He likes building things and seeing the final product. We’ve created a set of wood blocks for his little sisters. We do a lot of turning nothing into something-type of things.”

The Big Brother and Little Brother duo also created an end table for Nash’s mother, and when they’re not working on a project they focus their attention on video games or throwing the football around.

“He’s a positive kid and he’s helpful around the house with his brothers and sisters,” said Bearden. “He doesn’t complain or whine about certain situations. It seems each time we finish a project he’s learning what it takes to get to that end result.”

Nash’s end result at the derby race wasn’t what he had planned. His car wasn’t able to win a race and it looked as if he would return home empty-handed.

A week after the race Nash and Big Brother Bearden attended the awards ceremony. A week prior Nash’s vehicle did not win a single race, but Nash walked away that night with the “Best Overall Car” award.

“When they called his name he was pretty ecstatic. It was fun getting to see him win in the end. I think he was more excited having the best overall car than anything,” said Bearden.

The Sunset Speedsters Pinecar Racing Season will begin starting with the 2010/2011 inaugural race at South Bend Jr. Academy.

Southeastern Wisconsin companies are invited to send corporate teams to compete when the Boy Scouts of America, Milwaukee Chapter, hosts its Corporate Pinewood Derby contest on Thursday, June 17, at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

The event will include teams from Milwaukee-area companies competing in a familiar Cub Scout tradition by racing homemade pinewood derby cars down a track.

Corporations already signed up to participate include Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Waukesha Electric Systems Inc, Twin Disc Inc., Patrick Cudahy Inc., Ladish Forging LLC and P&H Mining Equipment Inc. The deadline to participate is Monday, June 14.

“Teams should participate to promote teambuilding in your company and have fun at the same time,” said Katie Clark, fundraising and marketing director for the Boy Scouts. “Where else can you race little cars down a giant track and act like a kid again?”

Awards will be presented in the following categories: fastest car, best of show, best of corporation and best dressed pit crew.

The best of corporation award will be given to the company who designs its car to best represent its company.

A new rookie class was established this year as well, feature providing five pre-cut cars that require only minor decorating and assembly. There will be special awards for the rookie class category.

Anyone interested can attend the event and enjoy the races, food and networking by purchasing a $20 “pit pass.”

“By attending, individuals can cheer on their favorite car and network with business leaders in our community,” Clark said.
