Most people find that a Pinewood Derby event is one of the most fun things to do with the family throughout the year. It is a great opportunity for people of all ages to get to know one another and it also helps to improve self esteem of each Cub Scout that participates. There are actually quite a few benefits for Cub Scouts to participate in a Pinewood Derby event. In fact one of the biggest joys of someone’s life is to look back and to think about all of the accomplishments they achieved on their own, especially when they were young.

Participating in the Pinewood Derby offers just that kind of experience and memory. This is an event that involves all family members who happen to be interested in box car racing but it is also something that encourages each Cub Scout to do a lot of the leg work on their own. Being able to build something like a Pinewood Derby car from nothing but a block of wood is quite the accomplishment for boys of all ages.

They tend to love it so much that they want to participate year after year, improving upon their designs from the year before. If you ask any boy in the Cub Scouts they will tell you that the Pinewood Derby is the biggest time of the year when it comes to events and competitions. In fact many Cub Scouts prefer the Pinewood Derby over playing sports like baseball and football!

Some other benefits to participating in the Pinewood Derby include but are not limited to:

Problem Solving

Because the Cub Scout must design and build Pinewood Derby Cars from scratch, it provides plenty of opportunity to learn and practice important problem solving skills. These are skills that will be used throughout life in school and in the real world once they have graduated.

Good Sports

Cub Scouts generally become good sports because they are taught the importance of the event and the commerodery as opposed to the importance of winning. Everyone is encouraged to cheer each other on and to be happy for those who win, no matter who those winners might be.

Building Bonds

More than likely the Cub Scout will need some help throughout the process of creating their Pinewood Derby car. This is especially true when it comes time to cut and sand their cars into the designs that they prefer. Getting involved and helping a Cub Scout to complete their car is a great way to build a tight bond and to get to know each other better.

It’s easy to get started! All the Cub Scout needs is a design idea and a Pinewood Derby car kit to get the show on the road. The rest is all imagination, creativity, and a little skill that can be learned as the event progresses.
